Seed Treatment (Pre-Planting Preparation)
- Scarification
- Gently rub seeds with sandpaper or nick them with a sharp knife to help water penetrate the seed coat.
- Soaking
- Soak seeds in lukewarm water for 12 hours before planting.
- Cold Stratification
- Place seeds in a moist paper towel inside a sealed plastic bag and refrigerate for 2–3 weeks before planting.
- Check weekly: If seedlings sprout in the fridge, remove them gently and plant immediately.
Planting Instructions
- Best Planting Time: Spring (after last frost) or late summer/early fall for next-year blooms.
- Soil Requirements: Well-draining, rich, loamy soil with a pH of 6.0–7.5.
- Sunlight: Full sun (at least 6–8 hours per day).
- Planting Depth: Lightly cover seeds with ¼ inch (6 mm) of soil.
- Spacing: 12–24 inches (30–60 cm) apart for proper air circulation and growth.
- Watering: Keep soil moist but not waterlogged until germination occurs.
- Temperature: 65–75°F (18–24°C) for optimal germination.
- Germination Time: 10–30 days under ideal conditions.
Care After Germination
- Once seedlings develop two sets of true leaves, thin them out to avoid overcrowding.
- Provide a support stake for tall varieties to prevent bending.
- Mulch around plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Water deeply once a week, avoiding wetting the leaves to prevent rust disease.
- Deadhead spent flowers to encourage more blooms.
- If growing in colder regions, cut back plants in late fall and apply mulch to protect roots over winter.
