AMARANTHUS TRICOLOR (Joseph's Coat, Ornamental Amaranth)
Seed Treatment
Soak seeds in warm water for 6–12 hours.
Optional: ⚠️ Experienced growers may use a diluted GA₃ (Gibberellic Acid) solution (50–100 ppm soak for 12–24 hrs) to improve germination rates. Improper use can damage seeds.
When to Sow
Indoors: Start seeds 4–6 weeks before last frost.
Outdoors: Direct sow after the last frost when soil is warm.
Germination Temperature
Ideal soil temp: 25–30°C (77–86°F).
Germination Time: 14 to 21 days
Light Requirement for Germination
Needs 12–16 hours of bright light per day. Use grow lights if sowing indoors to maintain consistent light exposure. Light helps prevent leggy seedlings.
How to Sow
- Sow seeds on the surface of moist, well-draining soil.
- Do not cover or barely dust with vermiculite; light aids germination.
- Mist gently to avoid displacing seeds.
Post-Germination Care
- Thin seedlings once they have 2–3 true leaves.
- Transplant outdoors after all danger of frost.
- Space 25–30 cm (10–12 in) apart in full sun.
Growing Tips
- Prefers well-draining soil, moderately rich in organic matter.
- Water regularly, but do not overwater.
- Pinch young plants for bushier growth.
- Heat and drought tolerant once established.
- Great for beds, borders, or edible landscapes.
Notes
- Grows up to 60–90 cm (24–36 in) tall.
- Attracts pollinators and beneficial insects.
- Foliage color intensifies in full sun.
