Aubrieta cultorum - Rock Cress

AUBRIETA CULTORUM (Rock Cress)

Aubrieta cultorum hybrida, also known as rock cress, is a low-growing, evergreen perennial that produces a vibrant carpet of flowers in spring. It is an excellent choice for rock gardens, borders, and walls.

COLD STRATIFY the seeds in the refrigerator for 2–4 weeks before sowing.

1. When to Sow

  • Outdoors: Late spring to early summer.

  • Indoors: Start 6–8 weeks before the last frost for earlier blooms.

2. Soil & Location

  • Prefers well-drained, alkaline to neutral soil (pH 6.5–7.5).

  • Mix sand or grit into the soil for better drainage.

  • Choose a full sun location for best flowering.

3. Sowing Depth & Spacing

  • Sow seeds on the surface of moist soil—do not cover, as they need light to germinate.

  • Space seedlings 15–30 cm (6–12 inches) apart once established.

4. Watering & Germination

  • Keep soil moist but not waterlogged.

  • Use a fine mist sprayer to prevent seed disturbance.

  • Germination time: 14–21 days at 18–21°C (65–70°F).

5. Transplanting & Care

  • Transplant outdoors after the last frost when seedlings are strong enough.

  • Water moderately—drought-tolerant once established.

  • Trim back lightly after flowering to encourage bushy growth.

With proper care, Aubrieta will return each spring, creating a beautiful, cascading floral display. ?✨
