Calandrinia umbellata (Rock Purslane)

Seed Treatment

Scarification: Lightly rub seeds with fine sandpaper or nick gently to weaken the seed coat.
Soaking: After scarification, soak seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours.

When to Sow

Indoors: Late winter to early spring.
Outdoors: After the last frost in spring or in mild climates, fall sowing is also possible.

Germination Time: 7 to 42 days.

Optimum Temperature: 20–25°C (68–77°F) — maintain consistent warmth.

How to Sow

Light required — sow seeds on the surface of the soil and press down gently. Do not cover heavily.
Use a well-draining, sandy or gritty mix.
Keep consistently moist but not soggy.

Post-Germination Care

Light: Full sun to part sun.
Watering: Allow soil to dry slightly between waterings once established. Drought-tolerant when mature.
Transplant carefully once seedlings are large enough to handle — avoid disturbing roots too much.

Growing Tips

  • Rock Purslane thrives in poor, well-drained soils and sunny locations.
  • Excellent for rock gardens, containers, and dry landscapes.
  • Protect from heavy frost — hardy in USDA zones 8–10.
  • Avoid heavy fertilization; too much nitrogen may reduce flowering.
