Calandrinia umbellata (Rock Purslane)

CALANDRINIA UMBELLATA (Rock Purslane)

Seed Treatment

  • Lightly scarify the seeds (rubbing gently with fine sandpaper).

  • Soak seeds in warm water for a few hours to soften the seed coat.

Planting Instructions

  1. Timing: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost or sow directly outdoors after the danger of frost has passed.

  2. Soil: Use well-draining, sandy, or loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0).

  3. Light Requirement: Seeds need light to germinate, so do not cover them with soil—just lightly press them into the surface.

  4. Watering: Keep the soil moist but not soggy until germination occurs.

  5. Temperature: Ideal germination temperature is 65-75°F (18-24°C).

  6. Germination Time: Seeds typically germinate in 7-14 days.

  7. Transplanting: Once seedlings develop a few sets of true leaves, transplant them to a sunny location with well-draining soil.

  8. Spacing: Space plants 6-12 inches apart to allow room for growth.

  9. Care: Once established, Calandrinia umbellata is drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
