Seed Treatment
Soak in warm water for 4–6 hours before sowing.
When to Sow
- Indoors: Start seeds 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost.
- Outdoors: Sow only after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed.
Soil Requirements
- Prefers light, well-draining soil enriched with compost or organic matter.
- Soil pH should be between 6.0 and 7.0.
- Avoid heavy clay or soggy soils.
Light Requirements
- Needs full sun (at least 6 hours daily) for strong stems and vibrant blooms.
Sowing Depth
- Surface sow seeds or press lightly into the soil without covering—celosia seeds need light to germinate.
Watering
- Keep soil evenly moist (not soggy) until germination.
- Water at the base once seedlings are established to prevent damping off.
Germination Time
- Germinates in 8–14 days at temperatures around 70–75°F (21–24°C).
Spacing
- Thin or transplant seedlings to 10–12 inches (25–30 cm) apart.
Growing Tips
- Celosia cristata produces showy, crested flower heads—ideal for beds, borders, and cutting gardens.
- Regular deadheading promotes continuous blooming.
- Very heat- and drought-tolerant once established.
- Avoid over-fertilizing, which can cause leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
- Great for cut flower arrangements and drying—flowers retain color well when dried.
