Seed Treatment
-
Soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours.
-
Cold Stratification: Japanese quince seeds require cold stratification to break dormancy and improve germination.
-
Mix the seeds with moist sand or peat moss in a plastic bag.
-
Store in the refrigerator (34–40°F or 1–4°C) for 90 days.
-
Check periodically to ensure the medium stays slightly moist but not soggy.
Sowing Instructions
-
Soil Preparation: Use a well-draining seed-starting mix, preferably a mix of sand, peat, and perlite.
-
Planting Depth: Sow the seeds ¼ inch (6 mm) deep in pots or directly in the garden after stratification.
-
Watering: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Avoid letting it dry out.
-
Temperature & Light: Place in a warm location (65–75°F or 18–24°C) with indirect sunlight. Germination may take 1 to 4 months.
-
Transplanting: Once seedlings are strong enough, transplant them to a sunny location with well-draining soil.
