Delphinium elatum

Seed Treatment

Cold stratify seeds for 21–28 days. Place them in a damp paper towel sealed inside a plastic bag and refrigerate at 35–40°F (2–5°C).

If seedlings emerge in the fridge, remove and plant them immediately.

Maximum Germination Time
Germination can take up to 42 days.

Optimum Temperature
Maintain a soil temperature of 60–65°F (15–18°C) during germination.

Light Requirements
Seeds need light to germinate. Do not cover with soil. Just press gently into the surface.

Planting Depth
Surface sow – lightly press seeds into the soil without burying them.

Watering
Keep soil consistently moist but never soggy. Use a mister to avoid disturbing seeds.

Post-Germination Care
After seedlings appear, place in a bright area or under grow lights. Thin or transplant when they develop 2–3 sets of true leaves. Harden off before planting outside.

Final Growing Conditions
Plant in full sun to partial shade. Prefers rich, well-draining soil. Shelter from strong wind.

Bloom Time
Expect towering blooms from early to mid-summer, with colors ranging from blue and lavender to white and pink.

Extra Tips
Label your seed bags with dates, and always use clean tools to prevent disease.
