Ferocactus latispinus or Devil’s Tongue Barrel Cactus is an appealing cactus characterized by a round, light green stem adorned with 13 to 23 sharp ribs and bunches of vibrant spines. It can reach a diameter of up to 16 inches (40 cm). Each areole typically hosts 6 to 15 radial spines along with around 4 central spines. The radial spines, which can be straight and measure up to 1 inch (2.5 cm) long, come in various hues like white, yellow, pink, or reddish. The central spines, longer and more colorful than the radial ones, include one wider, flat spine that can grow up to 3 inches (7.5 cm) long, with a downward or hooked tip. The funnel-shaped flowers, appearing in late fall or early winter, boast rich rose, purple, mauve, or purple-blue colors and can reach up to 1.6 inches (4 cm) in length. The fruits are either spherical or elongated, reaching a length of up to 1 inch (2.5 cm).

This cactus thrives in USDA hardiness zones 9b to 11b, tolerating temperatures from 25 °F (−3.9 °C) to 50 °F (+10 °C). Perennial succulent that is evergreen and blooms in the winter.
