Graceful native ornamental grass with purple-pink seed heads that shimmer in late summer.
Seed Treatment
- Cold Stratification:
Place seeds in a moist paper towel, seal in a plastic bag, and refrigerate for 2–4 weeks.
If seedlings emerge during stratification, remove them from the bag and plant immediately.
Optimum Temperature
20–25°C (68–77°F)
Warm soil is essential for best germination.
Germination Time
10–21 days under ideal conditions
Up to 28 days under sub-optimal conditions
How to Sow
- Sow on the surface of moist, well-draining soil
- Do not cover seeds; they need light to germinate
- Gently press seeds into soil for good contact
- Use a spray bottle to keep surface moist but not soggy
Container or Ground?
Suitable for both pots and direct sowing
Choose a sunny location with good drainage
Watering
- Keep moist during germination
- Once established, water sparingly – drought-tolerant
Light Requirements
Full sun (6–8 hrs/day)
Post-Germination Care
- Thin seedlings to 20–30 cm (8–12 in) apart
- Allow to mature undisturbed—grass develops more striking plumes in lean soil
- No fertilization needed; overfeeding reduces color and form
Overwintering
- Perennial in USDA zones 5–9
- In colder climates, allow seed heads to dry for reseeding or cut back in fall
Mature Height
30–60 cm (1–2 ft) with airy flower plumes
