Seed Treatment
- To stratify:
- Place seeds in a moist paper towel, seal in a plastic bag, and refrigerate for 2–4 weeks.
Planting Instructions
- Sowing Time:
- Indoors: Start seeds 6–8 weeks before the last frost if growing in cooler zones at a temperature of ?️ 65–75°F (18–24°C)
- Outdoors: Direct sow in late spring to early summer, once the soil has warmed to at least 65°F (18°C).
- Soil Requirements:
- Prefers well-drained sandy or loamy soil.
- Tolerates poor, dry soils and thrives in low-fertility conditions.
- Soil pH: 6.0–7.5 (neutral to slightly acidic or alkaline).
- Light Requirements:
- Requires full sun (6–8 hours daily) for best flowering and vibrant purple plumes.
- Sowing Instructions:
- Surface sow seeds directly onto the soil—do not cover, as they need light to germinate.
- Gently press them into the surface to ensure good seed-to-soil contact.
- Watering:
- Mist lightly and keep soil consistently moist until germination.
- Once established, this grass is drought-tolerant and requires little watering.
- Germination Time:
- Seeds typically germinate in 10–21 days under ideal conditions.
- Spacing:
- Thin or transplant seedlings 12–18 inches (30–45 cm) apart to allow clumping and air flow.
Growing Tips:
- Eragrostis spectabilis forms graceful mounds of foliage topped with airy, purplish seed heads in late summer.
- Ideal for prairie gardens, erosion control, meadows, borders, and natural landscaping.
- Provides excellent winter interest and is a favorite for dried floral arrangements.
- Leave seed heads for wildlife forage and reseeding.
