Erigeron karvinskianus (Mexican Fleabane, Santa Barbara Daisy)

For optimal germination rates, initiate seed propagation indoors under controlled conditions—unless the species exhibits a high sensitivity to root disturbance. This approach allows precise regulation of temperature, humidity, and light, improving germination consistency and seedling viability. Do not skip any recommended seed treatments, as they are essential for uniform and successful germination.

⚠️ Keep soil evenly moist during germination. DO NOT LET IT DRY OUT — once seeds begin absorbing water (imbibition), drying can kill the seed embryo, and even brief dryness after sprouting can kill seedlings.

Seed Treatment: None - FastraX perennial: First year flowering without vernalization

When to Sow Indoors

Sow indoors November–March for flowering plants from mid-spring onward.

When to Sow Outdoors (natural conditions)

Outdoor sowing is not recommended for reliable results. Seeds are extremely fine, light-dependent, and easily lost or dried out. Indoor sowing gives far higher success.

Optimum Germination Temperature:  60–65 °F (15–18 °C)

Germination Time: up to 28 days

How to Sow Indoors

  • Use a fine, well-draining seed-starting mix
    • Surface-sow seeds; gently press into the soil. Light is required to germinate.
    • Do not cover with soil
    • Mist lightly to avoid washing seeds away
    • Use grow lights to maintain 12–16 hours of light per day.
    • Ideal density: 5–6 seeds per plug or sow directly into the final pot

Humidity: Use a humidity dome or clear cover to maintain consistent moisture during germination. Open the dome briefly once per day to allow fresh air in and reduce mold risk. Remove the dome entirely once seedlings emerge.

Post-Germination Care

  • Grow seedlings at 60–65 °F (15–18 °C)
    • Once established, cooler conditions (50–59 °F / 10–15 °C) encourage compact growth
    • Harden off before moving outdoors
    • Hardened plants tolerate brief light frosts down to 24–25 °F (-4 °C)

Plant Type: Fast-flowering perennial (often flowers in the first year without vernalization)
Mature Height: 6–12 in (15–30 cm)
Spread: 12–24 in (30–60 cm)
Final Spacing: 12–18 in (30–45 cm)

Uses

  • Rock gardens
    • Borders and edging
    • Containers and patio pots
    • Hanging baskets and window boxes

Growing Tips

  • Prefers well-drained soil; avoid heavy, waterlogged mixes
    • Moderate feeding—avoid excess nitrogen to prevent floppy growth
    • Pinching early encourages bushier plants
    • Performs best in full sun to light partial shade
    • Excellent self-seeder once established
