Fuchsia boliviana (Bolivian Fuchsia)

Seed Treatment (Pre-Planting Preparation)

  • Cold Stratification:
    • Mix seeds with moist sand or a damp paper towel.
    • Place them in a sealed plastic bag and refrigerate at 40°F (4°C) for 4–6 weeks.
    • Check weekly: If seedlings sprout in the fridge, remove them gently and plant immediately.
    • Check periodically to ensure they remain moist but not soggy.

  • Soaking:
    • Soak seeds in lukewarm water for 12–24 hours before sowing to soften the seed coat and speed up germination.

Planting Instructions

  • Best Planting Time:
    • Spring or early summer (after the last frost).

  • Soil Requirements:
    • Well-draining, rich organic soil (pH 5.5–6.5).
    • A mix of peat moss, perlite, and compost works well.

  • Sunlight:
    • Prefers partial shade or dappled sunlight.

  • Planting Depth:
    • Surface sow (do not bury) – press seeds lightly onto the soil.
    • Cover very lightly with a fine layer of vermiculite or sand.

  • Spacing:
    • 12–24 inches (30–60 cm) apart to allow for bushy growth.

  • Watering:
    • Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy.
    • Mist lightly with a spray bottle to prevent disturbing the seeds.

  • Temperature for Germination:
    • 20–24°C / 68–75°F

  • Germination Time:
    • 1–3 months (can take longer, so be patient).

Care After Germination

  • Thinning: Once seedlings have a few sets of true leaves, transplant into larger pots or  permanent locations.
  • Mulching: Use a light mulch to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
  • Fertilization: Feed with a diluted liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks.
  • Transplanting Outdoors:
    • When seedlings are 6+ inches tall, move to a sheltered, partially shaded area.
  • Pruning: Pinch back new growth to encourage bushier plants.
