Fuchsia boliviana (Bolivian Fuchsia)
Seed Treatment (Pre-Planting Preparation)
- Cold Stratification:
- Mix seeds with moist sand or a damp paper towel.
- Place them in a sealed plastic bag and refrigerate at 40°F (4°C) for 4–6 weeks.
- Check weekly: If seedlings sprout in the fridge, remove them gently and plant immediately.
- Check periodically to ensure they remain moist but not soggy.
- Soaking:
- Soak seeds in lukewarm water for 12–24 hours before sowing to soften the seed coat and speed up germination.
Planting Instructions
- Best Planting Time:
- Spring or early summer (after the last frost).
- Soil Requirements:
- Well-draining, rich organic soil (pH 5.5–6.5).
- A mix of peat moss, perlite, and compost works well.
- Sunlight:
- Prefers partial shade or dappled sunlight.
- Planting Depth:
- Surface sow (do not bury) – press seeds lightly onto the soil.
- Cover very lightly with a fine layer of vermiculite or sand.
- Spacing:
- 12–24 inches (30–60 cm) apart to allow for bushy growth.
- Watering:
- Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy.
- Mist lightly with a spray bottle to prevent disturbing the seeds.
- Temperature for Germination:
- Germination Time:
- 1–3 months (can take longer, so be patient).
Care After Germination
- Thinning: Once seedlings have a few sets of true leaves, transplant into larger pots or permanent locations.
- Mulching: Use a light mulch to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
- Fertilization: Feed with a diluted liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks.
- Transplanting Outdoors:
- When seedlings are 6+ inches tall, move to a sheltered, partially shaded area.
- Pruning: Pinch back new growth to encourage bushier plants.
