Gardenia jasminoides | Cape Jasmine

Planting guides for Annuals, Biennials, Perennials, Shrub & Vine seeds can be found at:

https://bloomoutlet.com/seed-guides/

Please read both the seed guide and the plant specific sowing instructions. If you are unsure of the best way to germinate the seeds, DO NOT SOW ALL THE SEEDS. Keep some in case the germination method you use doesn’t work.

Cold stratify ALL perennials, shrub & tree seeds for at least 30 days unless the plant specific instructions indicate a longer period. Seeds WILL NOT germinate if you do not stratify.

If you are not ready to plant the seeds, keep it in the refrigerator (not freezer).

GARDENIA JASMINOIDES | CAPE JASMINE

1. Seed Preparation (Stratification & Scarification)

  • Soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours to soften the seed coat and improve germination.

  • Cold stratify for 30 days in the refrigerator.

  • Some gardeners recommend lightly scratching (scarifying) the seed with sandpaper to help with water absorption.

2. Choosing the Right Soil

  • Use a well-draining, acidic potting mix (pH 5.0–6.0). A mix of peat moss, perlite, and sand works well.

  • Ensure the soil is moist but not soggy before planting.

3. Sowing the Seeds

  • Plant the seeds about 1/8 inch (3 mm) deep in the soil.

  • Lightly cover with soil and mist with water to keep the surface moist.

  • Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid overwatering.

4. Temperature & Light Requirements

  • Maintain a warm temperature of 70–75°F (21–24°C) for germination.

  • Place the seed tray in bright, indirect light or use grow lights for at least 12–14 hours per day.

5. Germination Time

  • Gardenia seeds take 4–8 weeks to germinate, sometimes longer, so be patient!

6. Transplanting

  • Once seedlings have 2–3 sets of true leaves, carefully transplant them into individual pots.

  • Continue growing in bright, indirect light and keep humidity high for best results.

7. Ongoing Care

  • Water regularly, allowing the topsoil to dry slightly between waterings.

  • Keep humidity levels high (50%+).

  • Fertilize with a balanced, acidic plant fertilizer during the growing season.

With patience and proper care, your Gardenia jasminoides seeds will grow into beautiful, fragrant plants! ?✨
