Gardenia jasminoides | Cape Jasmine

Seed Preparation (Before Planting)

• Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours to soften the seed coat.

Cold stratify for 30 days in the refrigerator using a sealed plastic bag with moist paper towel, sand, or vermiculite (35–40°F / 2–5°C).

  • If seedlings sprout in the fridge, remove them gently and plant immediately.

• Lightly scarify seeds with sandpaper to improve water absorption.

Soil Requirements

• Use a well-draining, acidic mix (pH 5.0–6.0).
• Ideal blend: peat moss + perlite + sand.
• Keep soil moist but not soggy before sowing.

Sowing Instructions

Surface sow seeds and lightly press into the soil.
• Optionally dust with a very thin layer of fine soil or vermiculite.
• Mist lightly and cover with plastic or a humidity dome to maintain moisture.

Temperature & Light

• Maintain a warm temperature of 75–85°F (24–29°C).
• Provide bright, indirect light or use grow lights for 12–14 hours/day.

Germination Time

• Germination takes 6–12 weeks, and sometimes up to 16 weeks (112 days)
• Be patient—germination is often slow and irregular.

Post-Germination Care

• Once seedlings appear, remove humidity cover or bag.
• Provide indirect light and gentle airflow.
• Transplant when seedlings have 2–3 sets of true leaves, handling with care to avoid root damage.

Ongoing Care

• Water regularly, letting the topsoil dry slightly between waterings.
• Maintain high humidity (50%+).
• Fertilize during the growing season with an acidic, balanced fertilizer.

With care and patience, your Gardenia jasminoides will flourish into a fragrant and stunning evergreen beauty.
