Hibiscus syriacus (Rose of Sharon)

Seed Treatment (Pre-Planting Preparation)

  1. Scarification

    • Rub the seeds gently with sandpaper or a nail file to weaken the seed coat.

    • Alternatively, use a sharp blade to make a small nick on the seed surface.

  2. Soaking

    • Place the scarified seeds in warm water (77–86°F / 25–30°C) for 12–24 hours.

  3. Cold Stratification

    • Mix seeds with moist sand or peat moss in a plastic bag.

    • Store in the refrigerator (35–40°F / 1–4°C) for 4–6 weeks.

Planting Instructions

  • Best Planting Time: Spring or early summer.

  • Soil Requirements: Well-draining loamy or sandy soil with a pH of 5.5–7.5.

  • Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade (at least 6 hours of sunlight daily).

  • Planting Depth: ¼ inch (6 mm) deep, lightly covered with soil.

  • Spacing: 2–3 feet (60–90 cm) apart for proper airflow and growth.

  • Watering: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged until germination occurs.

  • Temperature for Germination: 70–85°F (21–29°C).

  • Germination Time: 2–4 weeks, but may take longer in some cases.

Care After Germination

  • Once seedlings develop 2-3 true leaves, thin them or transplant them to individual pots.

  • Water regularly but allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.

  • When seedlings are strong enough, harden them off before transplanting outdoors.

  • Hibiscus syriacus is drought-tolerant once established, but young plants need regular watering.
