Iberis umbellata (Candytuft)

Seed Preparation

  • Pre-Soaking: Soak seeds in warm water for 4–6 hours before sowing to help speed up germination.

When to Sow

  • Outdoors: After the danger of frost has passed (spring).
  • Indoors: 6–8 weeks before the last frost date.

Optimum Germination Temperature

  • 18–21°C (65–70°F)

Germination Time

  • Typically 10–21 days

How to Sow

  • Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Avoid soggy spots.
  • Location: Full sun is ideal for best blooms.
  • Sowing Depth: Lightly press seeds into the surface of moist soil. Do not cover—light helps germination.
  • Spacing: Thin or transplant to 15–20 cm (6–8 in) apart.

Watering

  • Keep soil evenly moist during germination.
  • Once established, water sparingly—Candytuft prefers drier soil over soggy conditions.

Post-Germination Care

  • Transplant indoor seedlings outdoors after the last frost and once hardened off.
  • Deadhead faded flowers to prolong blooming.
  • Suitable for beds, borders, and containers. Attracts butterflies!

Notes

  • Annual variety – reseeds readily.
  • Great for cut flowers and cottage gardens!
