Ipomoea alba (Moonflower)

SEED TREATMENT

  • Scarify: Nick or gently sand the seed coat to help water penetrate.
  • Soak: Soak scarified seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours before planting.

WHEN & WHERE TO SOW

  • Indoors: Start 4–6 weeks before the last frost in biodegradable pots for easy transplanting.
  • Outdoors: Sow directly after last frost once soil is warm.
  • Location: Choose a sunny spot (at least 6 hours/day). Ideal for trellises, fences, or railings.

OPTIMUM GERMINATION CONDITIONS

  • Temperature: 21–27°C (70–80°F)
  • Germination Time: 10–30 days
  • Keep the soil consistently moist (not soggy) during germination.

SOWING INSTRUCTIONS

  • Depth: 1–1.5 cm (½ inch)
  • Spacing: 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart
  • Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil. Add compost for best results.

POST-GERMINATION CARE

  • Light: Full sun is essential for vigorous vines and blooms.
  • Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry spells, but allow soil to dry slightly between waterings.
  • Support: Provide a trellis or fence for climbing.
  • Feeding: Use a balanced liquid fertilizer every 3–4 weeks during growing season.
  • Pinching: Pinch tips of young vines to encourage bushier growth.

BLOOM TIME

  • Flowers begin in mid to late summer and continue through fall. Blooms open in the evening and close by morning.

TIPS

  • Moonflower is a tender perennial (USDA Zones 10–11), grown as an annual in cooler climates.
  • Not frost-tolerant—plant only after all danger of frost has passed.
  • Can be grown in large containers with support.
