IPOMOEA IMPERIALIS (Morning Glory – Imperial Form)
For optimal germination rates, initiate seed propagation indoors under controlled conditions—unless the species exhibits a high sensitivity to root disturbance. This approach allows precise regulation of temperature, humidity, and light, improving germination consistency and seedling viability. Do not skip any recommended seed treatments, as they are essential for uniform and successful germination.
Keep soil evenly moist during germination. DO NOT LET IT DRY OUT—once seeds begin absorbing water (imbibition), drying can kill the seed embryo, and even brief dryness after sprouting can kill seedlings.
Seed Treatment
Step 1: Nick or lightly scarify the seed coat with a nail file or sandpaper to help water penetration.
Step 2: Soak seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours before sowing.
When to Sow Indoors: Start indoors 21–28 days before the last expected frost (3–4 weeks).
Optimum Germination Temperature: Use a heat mat to maintain steady temperatures of 20–25 °C (68–77 °F)
Germination Time: Up to 14 days under proper conditions.
Light Requirements for Germination
Seeds germinate best in darkness—cover lightly. No grow lights are needed until after emergence.
Once seedlings emerge, use grow lights to maintain 12–16 hours of light per day.
How to Sow Indoors
- SENSITIVE TO ROOT DISTURBANCE: Start in biodegradable pots, peat pellets, or deep cell trays so you can plant the whole container without disturbing roots. If you must transplant seedlings from a tray, do it very early—when they have only 1–2 true leaves—and disturb the roots as little as possible.
- Use a light, well-draining seed-starting mix.
- Sow seeds 6 mm (¼ in) deep and cover lightly with soil.
Humidity: Use a humidity dome or clear cover to maintain consistent moisture during germination. Open briefly once per day for fresh air. Remove dome when seedlings emerge. - Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy.
Post-Germination Care
- Once seedlings have 2–3 true leaves, transplant to individual pots.
- Harden off before planting outdoors after frost danger passes.
- Final Spacing: 30–45 cm (12–18 in) apart.
- Type: Tender annual climbing vine.
- Mature Height: 2.5–3 m (8–10 ft) with support.
- Prefers full sun and fertile, well-drained soil.
Growing Tips
- Provide trellises, fences, or strings for climbing.
- Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers—too much promotes foliage over blooms.
- Deadhead to encourage continued flowering.
