Please read both the seed guide and the plant specific sowing instructions. If you are unsure of the best way to germinate the seeds, DO NOT SOW ALL THE SEEDS. Keep some in case the germination method you use doesn’t work. 

Cold stratify ALL perennials, shrub & tree seeds for at least 30 days unless the plant specific instructions indicate a longer period. 

If you are not ready to plant the seeds, keep it in the refrigerator (not freezer).

Seed Treatment:

  1. Scarification (Enhances Germination Rate)

    • Gently nick or file the seed coat using a nail file or sandpaper.

    • This helps water penetrate the hard outer shell.

  2. Pre-Soaking (Speeds Up Germination)

    • Soak seeds in warm water (not boiling) for 12–24 hours before planting.

    • This softens the seed coat and encourages quicker sprouting.

Sowing Instructions:

  • Timing:

    • Direct sow after the last frost, when soil temperatures reach 65–75°F (18–24°C).

    • Can be started indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost for an early start.

  • Sowing Depth:

    • Plant seeds ¼ inch (6 mm) deep.

    • Lightly cover with soil and firm gently.

  • Spacing:

    • Space seeds 6–12 inches (15–30 cm) apart.

    • If growing on a trellis, thin to 12 inches (30 cm) apart after germination.

  • Soil Requirements:

    • Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil.

    • Tolerates poor soil but thrives in a neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.0–7.0).

  • Watering:

    • Keep soil evenly moist during germination but avoid overwatering.

    • Once established, morning glories are drought-tolerant and require minimal watering.

  • Germination Time:

    • Seeds usually sprout in 5–14 days.

  • Sunlight:

    • Requires full sun (at least 6–8 hours of sunlight daily).

Additional Tips:

  • Provide a trellis, fence, or support for climbing varieties.

  • Avoid over-fertilization, as too much nitrogen promotes leaves over flowers.

  • Morning glories self-seed readily, so deadhead spent flowers to prevent excessive spreading.
