Papaver somniferum paeoniflorum (Peony Poppy)

Seed Treatment

  • Cold stratification is NOT required, but a brief period of cold exposure (natural winter sowing) can improve germination.

  • Do NOT cover seeds—they need light to germinate.

Sowing Instructions

Direct Outdoor Sowing (Best Method)

  1. Timing:

    • Sow in late fall for natural cold exposure or early spring when soil temperatures are around 50–65°F (10–18°C).

  2. Location:

    • Choose a full sun area with well-draining, sandy, or loamy soil.

  3. Sowing Depth:

    • Surface sow the seeds and press lightly into the soil. Do not cover them.

  4. Watering:

    • Keep the soil moist but not soggy until germination occurs.

  5. Germination Time:

    • Seeds typically sprout in 7–21 days.

Indoor Sowing (For Early Blooms)

  1. Start seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost.

  2. Use biodegradable pots to avoid disturbing roots during transplanting.

  3. Provide bright light and keep temperatures around 60–70°F (15–21°C).

  4. Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are 2–3 inches tall and after the last frost.

Growth & Care

  • Spacing: Thin seedlings to 8–12 inches apart to allow air circulation.

  • Soil pH: Prefers slightly alkaline soil (6.5–7.5 pH).

  • Watering: Water moderately; poppies prefer dry conditions once established.

  • Fertilization: Minimal fertilizer needed; too much nitrogen can reduce flowering.

  • Bloom Time: Late spring to early summer.

  • Height: Grows 2–4 feet tall.

  • Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to extend the blooming period.
