Papaver somniferum paeoniflorum (Peony Poppy)

Seed Treatment
No pre-treatment necessary. Do not soak or stratify. Seeds are naturally primed for cool-weather sowing.

Sowing Method
Surface sow. Do not cover with soil. Light is essential for germination. Gently press seeds into the soil using a board or flat tool to ensure contact.

Optimum Temperature
Germinates best between 10–15°C (50–59°F). Avoid high heat during germination.

Germination Time: 7 to 28 days

When to Sow

  • Outdoors: Early spring (just as soil becomes workable) or late fall for natural stratification.
  • Indoors: Not recommended—poppies dislike root disturbance.

Post-Germination Care

  • Thin seedlings to 20–30 cm (8–12 in) apart once true leaves emerge.
  • Water lightly but regularly—avoid waterlogging.
  • Provide full sun and well-draining soil.
  • Avoid transplanting once established; direct sowing is preferred.

Soil Requirements
Prefers loose, sandy, well-drained soil. Avoid rich or wet soils. Moderate fertility is ideal.

Watering
Water lightly during germination. Once established, poppies are drought-tolerant. Let soil dry between waterings.

Bloom Time
Flowers bloom in early to midsummer, typically 60–90 days after germination. Large, showy blooms last 1–2 weeks.

Deadheading & Seed Collection
Deadheading prolongs bloom, but allow some pods to mature for reseeding. Harvest pods when dry for seed saving.
