Seed Treatment
-
Cold stratification is NOT required, but a brief period of cold exposure (natural winter sowing) can improve germination.
-
Do NOT cover seeds—they need light to germinate.
Sowing Instructions
Direct Outdoor Sowing (Best Method)
-
Timing:
-
Sow in late fall for natural cold exposure or early spring when soil temperatures are around 50–65°F (10–18°C).
-
Location:
-
Choose a full sun area with well-draining, sandy, or loamy soil.
-
Sowing Depth:
-
Surface sow the seeds and press lightly into the soil. Do not cover them.
-
Watering:
-
Keep the soil moist but not soggy until germination occurs.
-
Germination Time:
-
Seeds typically sprout in 7–21 days.
Indoor Sowing (For Early Blooms)
-
Start seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost.
-
Use biodegradable pots to avoid disturbing roots during transplanting.
-
Provide bright light and keep temperatures around 60–70°F (15–21°C).
-
Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are 2–3 inches tall and after the last frost.
Growth & Care
-
Spacing: Thin seedlings to 8–12 inches apart to allow air circulation.
-
Soil pH: Prefers slightly alkaline soil (6.5–7.5 pH).
-
Watering: Water moderately; poppies prefer dry conditions once established.
-
Fertilization: Minimal fertilizer needed; too much nitrogen can reduce flowering.
-
Bloom Time: Late spring to early summer.
-
Height: Grows 2–4 feet tall.
-
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to extend the blooming period.
