Stipa tenuissima syn Nassella (Mexican Feather Grass, Finestem Needlegrass)

For optimal germination rates, initiate seed propagation indoors under controlled conditions—unless the species exhibits a high sensitivity to root disturbance. This approach allows precise regulation of temperature, humidity, and light, improving germination consistency and seedling viability. Do not skip any recommended seed treatments, as they are essential for uniform and successful germination.

⚠️ Keep soil evenly moist during germination. DO NOT LET IT DRY OUT—once seeds begin absorbing water (imbibition), drying can kill the seed embryo, and even brief dryness after sprouting can kill seedlings.

Seed Treatment

Optional: Soak seeds in room-temperature water for 6 hours before sowing. Do not soak longer than 12 hours, or oxygen deprivation can damage the embryo.

When to Sow Indoors
Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks (42–56 days) before the last expected frost.

When to Sow Outdoors
Direct sow outdoors after the last frost once soil temperatures reach about 15–20°C (59–68°F).
Seeds can also be sown outdoors in autumn for natural winter stratification in colder climates.

Germination Time: Up to 120 days

How to Sow Indoors

  1. Fill seed trays or small pots with a well-draining seed-starting mix.

  2. Lightly press seeds onto the soil surface and cover very lightly with a thin layer of soil or vermiculite (about 1–2 mm). Seeds germinate best with light exposure. Do not bury deeply.

  3. Mist gently to settle seeds without washing them away.

  4. Use grow lights to maintain 12–16 hours of light per day.

  5. Use a heat mat to maintain steady temperatures of 18–22°C (65–72°F)

Humidity: Use a humidity dome or clear cover to maintain consistent moisture during germination. Open the dome BRIEFLY once per day to allow fresh air in and reduce mold risk. Remove the dome entirely once seedlings emerge.

Post-Germination Care
Once seedlings emerge, remove the humidity dome and continue providing strong light. Keep soil lightly moist but not soggy.
When seedlings develop 2–3 true leaves, transplant them into larger containers if needed.
Harden off plants gradually over 7–10 days before transplanting outdoors.

Plant Type: Perennial ornamental grass (often grown as a short-lived perennial or self-seeding ornamental)
Mature Height: 45–60 cm (18–24 in)
Final Plant Spacing: 30–45 cm (12–18 in)

Growing Tips
• Prefers full sun for best growth and graceful movement.
• Thrives in well-drained, sandy or gritty soil and tolerates poor soils.
• Avoid overly rich soil or heavy fertilization, which can reduce the plant’s natural airy form.
• Once established, plants are drought tolerant and require minimal maintenance.
• Remove old foliage in early spring to encourage fresh growth.
• Can self-seed in favorable climates, creating naturalized ornamental drifts.
