Verbascum chaixii (Nettle-Leaved Mullein)

Seed Treatment (Pre-Planting Preparation)

  • Cold Stratification: 2–4 week cold stratification (mixing seeds with moist sand and refrigerating at 35–40°F / 2–5°C).

Sowing Instructions

  • Best Planting Time: Early spring or autumn.

  • Soil: Well-draining, poor to moderately fertile soil; tolerates sandy, loamy, or gravelly soil.

  • Light Requirement: Full sun is ideal for best growth and flowering.

  • Planting Depth: Surface sow (do not cover with soil, as seeds require light to germinate). Press seeds lightly into the soil.

  • Spacing:12–18 inches (30–45 cm) apart to allow proper airflow.

  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist until germination, but avoid overwatering.

Germination & Aftercare

  • Germination Time: 2–4 weeks at temperatures around 60–70°F (15–21°C).

  • Watering Routine: Water young seedlings regularly until established. Mature plants are drought-tolerant and require minimal watering.

  • Fertilization: Generally not needed. Thrives in nutrient-poor soils. Avoid excessive fertilizer, as it may reduce flowering.

  • Growth Habit: A biennial or short-lived perennial with tall flower spikes. Flowers attract pollinators like bees and butterflies.

  • Pruning: Deadhead spent flowers to encourage prolonged blooming and prevent excessive self-seeding.

Once established, Verbascum chaixii is low-maintenance, drought-resistant, and a great addition to wildlife-friendly gardens! ??
