Verbena bonariensis

VERBENA BONARIENSIS

Seed Treatment (Cold Stratification)

  • Place seeds in a damp paper towel inside a sealed plastic bag.

  • Store in the refrigerator (not freezer) for 2–4 weeks before planting.

  • After stratification, allow seeds to reach room temperature before sowing.

Planting Instructions

1. Timing

  • Indoors: Start seeds 8–10 weeks before the last frost.

  • Outdoors: Direct sow in late fall or early spring when soil is cool.

2. Soil & Container

  • Use well-draining soil with compost or sand for aeration.

  • If starting indoors, use seed trays or small pots.

3. Sowing

  • Sprinkle seeds on top of the soil—they need light to germinate.

  • Press them lightly into the soil but do not cover with soil.

4. Moisture & Light

  • Keep soil moist but not soggy by misting gently.

  • Provide full sun exposure (at least 6–8 hours daily).

5. Temperature

  • Maintain a soil temperature of 65–75°F (18–24°C) for best germination.

6. Germination

  • Seeds take 14–28 days to germinate.

7. Transplanting

  • Once seedlings have two sets of true leaves, transplant them outdoors after the last frost.

  • Harden them off gradually before planting in the garden.

8. Spacing

  • Space plants 18–24 inches apart in well-drained soil.
