Seed Treatment
Step 1: Cold stratify: Place seeds on a damp paper towel inside a sealed plastic bag and refrigerate for 42–56 days (6–8 weeks).
Check weekly. If seedlings sprout early, gently transplant them into moist soil.
When to Sow
Indoors: Late winter to early spring after stratification.
Outdoors: Sow in fall to allow natural cold stratification through winter.
Germination Conditions
Temperature: 15–20°C (59–68°F)
Time: 42–365 days (6–12 weeks or longer after stratification)
Light: Light required for germination. Use grow lights to maintain 12–16 hours of light per day.
How to Sow Indoors
Sow seeds on the surface of moist, well-draining seed-starting mix.
Press gently into the soil—do not cover, as seeds need light.
Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy.
Humidity: Use a humidity dome or clear cover to maintain consistent moisture during germination. Open the dome briefly once per day to allow fresh air in and reduce mold risk. Remove the dome entirely once seedlings emerge.
Soil & Location
Well-draining soil is essential—avoid soggy areas.
Neutral to slightly alkaline pH preferred.
Choose full sun or light shade.
Post-Germination Care
Transplant seedlings after several true leaves develop.
Final spacing: 10–15 cm (4–6 in) apart.
Water moderately—allow soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Avoid overwatering, especially in cool or damp conditions.
Growing Tips
Forms bulbs that may take 2–3 seasons to bloom.
Hardy in USDA Zones 4–9.
Protect young seedlings from frost.
Drought-tolerant and low-maintenance once established.
Mark planting areas—seedlings are tiny and slow to develop.
Ideal for perennial beds, wild gardens, and naturalizing among grasses.
