Seed Treatment:
- Surface Sterilization (Optional) – To prevent fungal infections, soak seeds in a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution (1% concentration) for 5 minutes, then rinse with distilled water.
- Light Sensitivity – Begonia seeds need light to germinate, so do not cover them with soil.
Sowing Instructions:
- Choose a Well-Draining Substrate:
- Use a fine-textured seed-starting mix with good aeration.
- A mix of peat moss, vermiculite, and perlite works well.
- Avoid heavy or compacted soil.
- Moisten the Soil:
- Lightly mist the soil with water before sowing.
- Avoid overwatering; the medium should be damp but not soggy.
- Sow the Seeds:
- Sprinkle the tiny seeds on the surface of the soil.
- Do not cover them with soil or press them down.
- Provide Humidity & Light:
- Cover the seed tray with a clear plastic lid or use a humidity dome to maintain high moisture levels.
- Place the tray under bright, indirect light or use grow lights (12–16 hours daily).
- Optimal Temperature for Germination:
- Keep the temperature between 70–75°F (21–24°C).
- Avoid temperature fluctuations, as it can slow germination.
- Watering:
- Use bottom watering or mist gently with a spray bottle to avoid disturbing the seeds.
- Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Germination & Growth:
- Germination Time: 14–21 days under optimal conditions.
- After Germination:
- Remove the humidity dome gradually to acclimate the seedlings.
- Keep seedlings in bright, indirect light.
- Transplant when they have at least 2–3 true leaves.
