Begonia incarnata (Metallic Leaf Begonia)

Seed Treatment:

  1. Surface Sterilization (Optional) – To prevent fungal infections, soak seeds in a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution (1% concentration) for 5 minutes, then rinse with distilled water.
  2. Light Sensitivity – Begonia seeds need light to germinate, so do not cover them with soil.

Sowing Instructions:

  1. Choose a Well-Draining Substrate:

    • Use a fine-textured seed-starting mix with good aeration.
    • A mix of peat moss, vermiculite, and perlite works well.
    • Avoid heavy or compacted soil.
  2. Moisten the Soil:

    • Lightly mist the soil with water before sowing.
    • Avoid overwatering; the medium should be damp but not soggy.
  3. Sow the Seeds:

    • Sprinkle the tiny seeds on the surface of the soil.
    • Do not cover them with soil or press them down.
  4. Provide Humidity & Light:

    • Cover the seed tray with a clear plastic lid or use a humidity dome to maintain high moisture levels.
    • Place the tray under bright, indirect light or use grow lights (12–16 hours daily).
  5. Optimal Temperature for Germination:

    • Keep the temperature between 70–75°F (21–24°C).
    • Avoid temperature fluctuations, as it can slow germination.
  6. Watering:

    • Use bottom watering or mist gently with a spray bottle to avoid disturbing the seeds.
    • Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

Germination & Growth:

  • Germination Time: 14–21 days under optimal conditions.
  • After Germination:
    • Remove the humidity dome gradually to acclimate the seedlings.
    • Keep seedlings in bright, indirect light.
    • Transplant when they have at least 2–3 true leaves.
