Prunus serotina var. serotina, commonly known as Black Cherry or Eastern Black Cherry, is a deciduous tree native to North America. Belonging to the Rosaceae family. They are often found in mixed hardwood forests where they provide habitat and food sources for a range of wildlife. The cherries produced by these trees serve as a valuable food source for birds including the American Robin, Northern Mockingbird and Cedar Waxwing, mammals and insects. The tree’s leaves and twigs decompose to enrich the soil.
Black Cherry trees typically grow to 124 ft (38 m). They have a distinctive dark gray to black bark that develops horizontal fissures with age. In the spring, the tree produces clusters of fragrant white flowers, which eventually give way to small, round, dark red to black cherries that mature in July to August with vivid yellow foliage in the fall.
Also known as Rum Cherry which is derived from the historical use of the cherries in flavoring beverages, including rum. Native American tribes and early settlers used the cherries in various culinary preparations, such as jams, jellies, and pies. The wood of Black Cherry trees has been highly valued for its rich, red tint, durability, and fine grain, making it sought after for furniture, cabinetry, and woodworking. The wood also has a pleasant aroma.
