Forsythia suspensa

Seed Prep (Cold Stratification Required)

  1. Cold Stratification (60–90 days):

    • Place seeds in a moist paper towel or moist sand inside a sealed plastic bag.
    • Store in the refrigerator (35–40°F / 2–5°C).
    • Check weekly to make sure they stay moist but not soggy.
    • If seeds sprout during this time, plant them right away.

  2. Soak Before Planting:

    • Soak seeds in lukewarm water for 12–24 hours before sowing to help soften the seed coat.

Planting Instructions

  • Best Sowing Time:
Indoors: Late winter to Early Spring (January–March)
    Outdoors (Natural Stratification): Fall (October–November)

  • Soil: Well-draining, fertile soil (pH 6.0–7.5)
  • Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade
  • Planting Depth: Sow 1/8 inch (3 mm) deep; cover lightly
  • Spacing: Space plants 12–18 inches (30–45 cm) apart
  • Watering: Keep soil moist but not soggy during germination
  • Germination Temperature: 65–75°F (18–24°C)
  • Germination Time: 28 to 90 days after stratification (sometimes longer)

After Germination Care

  • Transplant when seedlings are 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) tall
  • Water regularly, especially during dry spells
  • Prune after flowering to encourage fuller, bushier growth
  • Forsythia is a tough shrub once established and tolerates a wide range of soil types
