Gaura lindheimeri syn Oenothera lindheimeri (Whirling Butterflies)

(syn. Oenothera lindheimeri)

For optimal germination rates, initiate seed propagation indoors under controlled conditions—unless the species exhibits a high sensitivity to root disturbance. This approach allows precise regulation of temperature, humidity, and light, improving germination consistency and seedling viability. Do not skip any recommended seed treatments, as they are essential for uniform and successful germination.

⚠️ Keep soil evenly moist during germination. DO NOT LET IT DRY OUT—once seeds begin absorbing water (imbibition), drying can kill the seed embryo, and even brief dryness after sprouting can kill seedlings.

When to Sow Indoors:
Sow indoors 8–10 weeks before the last expected frost, or in early spring for same-season flowering.

Germination Temperature: 18–21°C / 65–70°F.

Germination Time:
Up to 35 days. Some seeds may sprout earlier, but allow the full period before assuming failure. Germination is slow and erratic

Light Requirements for Germination:
Needs light to germinate. Press seeds onto the surface of the soil and barely cover with a very thin layer of fine soil or vermiculite. Use grow lights to maintain 12–16 hours of light per day.

How to Sow Indoors:
Fill seed trays or small pots with moist, well-draining seed-starting mix. Press seeds gently onto the surface and barely cover. Keep warm and evenly moist, but not soggy.

Humidity: Use a humidity dome or clear cover to maintain consistent moisture during germination. Open the dome BRIEFLY once per day to allow fresh air in and reduce mold risk. Remove the dome entirely once seedlings emerge.

Post-Germination Care:
Once seedlings appear, provide bright light and good airflow. Keep soil lightly moist, not wet. Transplant carefully when seedlings have several true leaves, as gaura develops a taproot and dislikes rough handling. Harden off before planting outdoors after frost danger has passed.

Final Plant Spacing:
Space plants 45–60 cm / 18–24 in apart.

Plant Type:
Short-lived perennial, often grown as an annual in colder climates.

Mature Height:
Approx. 60–120 cm / 24–48 in, depending on variety and growing conditions.

Growing Tips:
Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. Gaura tolerates heat and drought once established, but young plants need regular moisture while they settle in. Avoid heavy, soggy soil, which can cause root problems. Do not over-fertilize, as rich soil can make plants tall, floppy, and less compact. Trim lightly after flowering to encourage fresh growth and more blooms.
