Kalmia latifolia (Mountain Laurel)

Cold Stratification:

1. Mix seeds into moist sand, peat, or vermiculite to maintain hydration and prevent loss.
2. Seal the mix in a plastic bag and refrigerate at 34–40°F (1–4°C) for 4–6 weeks.
3. Alternative method: You may also use a moist paper towel in a plastic bag, but handle carefully — the seeds are very small and delicate.
4. Check weekly to ensure the medium remains slightly damp (not wet).
5. If any seeds germinate in the fridge, remove and sow immediately.

Sowing Instructions

Best Time to Sow: After stratification, in early spring or fall
Soil: Use well-draining, acidic soil (peat-based or a mix of sand and loam)
Soil pH: Aim for 4.5–5.5
Sowing Depth: Do not cover – press seeds gently onto the soil surface (light is needed to germinate)
Moisture: Keep soil consistently moist, not soggy. Use a humidity dome or plastic wrap to retain humidity
Germination Temperature: 65–75°F (18–24°C)
Germination Time: Usually 1–3 months after stratification, sometimes longer

Post-Germination Care

Gradually increase light exposure after sprouting — start with indirect light
Transplant when seedlings have 2 or more true leaves, using acidic, well-draining soil
When mature enough, plant outdoors in a partially shaded area with good airflow

What to Expect

Slow-growing — patience is key
Evergreen shrub offering year-round interest
Deer-resistant and perfect for shaded gardens or woodland areas
Toxic if ingested — avoid planting near pets or grazing animals
