Seed Treatment (Stratification)
-
Cold Stratification Required
-
Mix seeds with moist sand or peat.
-
Place in a sealed plastic bag and store in the refrigerator at 34–40°F (1–4°C) for 4–6 weeks.
-
Check periodically to ensure the medium remains slightly damp but not wet.
Sowing Instructions
-
Best Time to Sow – After stratification, in early spring or fall.
-
Soil Requirements – Use a well-draining, acidic soil mix (peat-based or a mix of sand and loam).
-
Sowing Depth – Do not cover the seeds; they need light to germinate. Simply press them gently onto the soil surface.
-
Moisture & Humidity – Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. A humidity dome or plastic wrap can help retain moisture.
-
Temperature for Germination – Ideal range is 65–75°F (18–24°C).
-
Germination Time – 1 to 3 months, though it can sometimes take longer.
Care After Germination
-
Once seedlings emerge, gradually expose them to more light and remove humidity covers.
-
Transplant when they have at least two sets of true leaves into individual pots with acidic, well-draining soil.
-
When mature enough, plant in a partially shaded location with good air circulation outdoors.
