Seed Treatment

  1. Cold Stratification
    • Place seeds in a moist paper towel inside a sealed plastic bag.
    • Store in the refrigerator (40°F/4°C) for 4–6 weeks.
    • Check occasionally to ensure the paper towel remains moist.

  2. Pre-Soaking
    • Soak seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours before sowing.
    • This helps soften the seed coat and encourages faster germination.

Sowing Instructions

Indoor Sowing (Best for Controlled Growth)

  1. Timing: Start seeds 8–10 weeks before the last frost indoors.
  2. Seed Trays: Fill with a well-draining, sandy potting mix (mix of sand, peat, and perlite).
  3. Planting Depth: Sow seeds just below the surface (lightly press into the soil but do not bury deeply).
  4. Moisture & Temperature: Keep soil moist but not soggy. Maintain temperatures of 65–70°F (18–21°C).
  5. Light: Provide bright, indirect light or use grow lights.
  6. Germination Time: Seeds take 21–30 days to germinate.

Outdoor Sowing (For Natural Growth)

  1. Timing: Sow in fall or early spring for natural stratification.
  2. Location: Choose a site with full sun and well-draining soil.
  3. Planting Depth: Sow seeds shallowly (⅛ inch or 3 mm deep).
  4. Watering: Keep soil evenly moist until germination occurs.

Transplanting & Care

  • Hardening Off: Once seedlings have 2–3 sets of true leaves, gradually introduce them to outdoor conditions over 7–10 days.
  • Spacing: Transplant seedlings 12–18 inches (30–45 cm) apart.
  • Soil: Prefers loamy, well-draining soil; avoid waterlogged areas.
  • Watering: Drought-tolerant but needs regular watering until established.
  • Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring.
