Kniphofia also known as Red hot poker, Torch flower, Tritoma, Torch lily, Tritomea, Poker plant are evergreen or deciduous, rhizomatous perennials from mountainous or upland areas, often in moist places in rough grass or along stream sides in southern and tropical Africa. Most are clump-forming with light to mid-green or blue-green leaves. In deciduous plants and hybrids, these leaves are usually thin, grass like and 4-39 in. (10-100cm) long. In evergreens, they are broader and up to 5 ft. (1.5m) long. The erect, numerous, spike-like flowerheads are 2-16 in. (5-40cm) long and are found well above the foliage and open from the bottom up. The flowers are red/burgundy, orange, yellow, white or greenish white. Some open red then turn yellow. Plant height ranges from 20 in. (50cm) high to 6 ft. (1.8m). Where not hardy, grow in a cool or temperate greenhouse. No significant insect or disease problems.
