Seed Treatment
Step 1: Soak seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours.
Step 2: Cold stratify by placing seeds on a moist paper towel, folding it, and sealing it in a labeled ziplock bag. Refrigerate at 4°C (39°F) for 90 days. Check weekly and plant immediately if any seeds sprout early.
When to Sow
Indoors: Sow in late winter to early spring (January–March)
Outdoors (for natural stratification): Sow in autumn in a shaded, sheltered location. Press seeds onto the soil surface without covering. Keep moist over winter to allow for natural chilling.
Germination Temperature: 18–22°C (64–72°F)
Germination Time: up to 90 days after stratification
Light Requirements:
Light is required for germination. Use grow lights to maintain 12–16 hours of light per day.
How to Sow Indoors
Surface-sow seeds on moist, sterile seed-starting mix. Do not cover — seeds need light. Mist gently to settle them.
Humidity: Use a humidity dome or clear cover to maintain consistent moisture during germination. Open the dome briefly once per day to allow fresh air in and reduce mold risk. Remove the dome entirely once seedlings emerge.
Post-Germination Care
Transplant seedlings into individual pots when they have at least two true leaves. Keep in bright light and water when the top layer of soil feels dry. Harden off before moving outdoors. Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. Space plants 1.5–2 m (5–6.5 ft) apart in well-drained soil. Water deeply during the first year to establish roots. Prune lightly after flowering to shape the plant and encourage strong branching.
