Lagurus ovatus (Bunny Tails Grass)

Soft, ornamental plumes perfect for fresh or dried arrangements!

For optimal germination rates, initiate seed propagation indoors under controlled conditions—unless the species exhibits a high sensitivity to root disturbance. This approach allows precise regulation of temperature, humidity, and light, improving germination consistency and seedling viability. Do not skip any recommended seed treatments, as they are essential for uniform and successful germination.

Best Time to Sow
Indoors: Start 2–4 weeks before your last expected frost (early to mid-spring)
Outdoors: Direct sow after the danger of frost has passed (mid to late spring)

Seed Prep & Treatment
Soak seeds in room-temperature water for 4–6 hours before sowing.

Optimum Germination Temperature: Use a heat mat to maintain a steady temperature of 18–22 °C (64–72 °F)

Germination Time: 7–28 days

Sowing Instructions

  1. Fill trays or pots with a well-draining seed-starting mix.
  2. Sow on the surface – seeds need light to germinate. Gently press in without covering.
  3. Use grow lights to maintain 12–16 hours of light per day.
  4. Mist lightly to moisten. Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy.

Humidity: Use a humidity dome or clear cover to maintain consistent moisture during germination. Open the dome BRIEFLY once per day to allow fresh air in and reduce mold risk. Remove the dome entirely once seedlings emerge.

Post-Germination Care
Once seedlings emerge, give them plenty of light to stay compact.
Use light airflow to prevent damping off.
Thin seedlings when 2–3 cm tall, keeping the strongest.

Transplanting
Transplant outdoors after last frost, spacing 20–25 cm (8–10") apart.
Plant in full sun with well-drained soil.

Additional Tips

  • Excellent for containers, borders, or cut flower gardens

Cut mature seed heads for dried bouquets – they hold their shape beautifully!
