Mesembryanthemum criniflorum (Livingstone Daisy / Ice Plant)

(Dorotheanthus bellidiformis)

For optimal germination rates, initiate seed propagation indoors under controlled conditions—unless the species exhibits a high sensitivity to root disturbance. This approach allows precise regulation of temperature, humidity, and light, improving germination consistency and seedling viability. Do not skip any recommended seed treatments, as they are essential for uniform and successful germination.

Keep soil evenly moist during germination. DO NOT LET IT DRY OUT—once seeds begin absorbing water (imbibition), drying can kill the seed embryo, and even brief dryness after sprouting can kill seedlings.

Seed Treatment
Seeds are tiny and delicate.
Step 1: Soak in lukewarm water for 1–2 hours to soften the seed coat.
Step 2: Do not cover seeds with soil—they need light to germinate.

When to Sow
Indoors: Start seeds 6–8 weeks before your last expected frost.
Outdoors: Direct sow in late spring, after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed.

Sowing Instructions

  • Surface sow on pre-moistened soil.
  • Gently press seeds in—do not bury.
  • Use grow lights to maintain 12–16 hours of light per day.
  • Mist gently to keep soil moist until germination.
  • Germination Temperature: Use a heat mat to maintain a steady temperature of 70–75°F (21–24°C)
  • Germination Time: 7–28 days
  • Humidity: Use a humidity dome or clear cover to maintain consistent moisture during germination. Open the dome BRIEFLY once per day to allow fresh air in and reduce mold risk. Remove the dome entirely once seedlings emerge.
  • Thin or transplant seedlings 6–12 in (15–30 cm) apart once they’re large enough to handle.

Watering

  • Once established, water sparingly—plants prefer dry conditions and are very drought-tolerant.
  • Avoid overwatering to prevent rot.

Soil Requirements
Light, sandy, well-draining soil.
Tolerates poor or dry conditions.
Ideal pH: 6.0–7.5
