Nemesia strumosa

Sowing Instructions

Indoor Sowing (Recommended for Early Blooms)

  1. Timing: Start seeds 6–8 weeks before the last frost.

  2. Containers & Soil: Use a well-draining, fine-textured seed-starting mix in trays or pots.

  3. Sowing Depth: Surface sow the seeds and lightly press them into the soil. Do not bury them as they need light to germinate.

  4. Watering: Mist lightly to keep the soil moist but not soggy.

  5. Light & Temperature:

    • Maintain a temperature of 60–70°F (15–21°C).

    • Provide bright indirect light or a grow light.

  6. Germination Time: 7–14 days.

Direct Outdoor Sowing (After Frost)

  1. Timing: Sow after the last frost, when the soil is warm.

  2. Location: Choose a full sun to partial shade location with well-drained soil.

  3. Sowing Depth: Surface sow and press seeds lightly into the soil.

  4. Moisture: Keep the soil evenly moist until germination occurs.

Growth & Care

  • Watering: Water regularly, keeping the soil slightly moist. Avoid waterlogging.

  • Soil Preference: Prefers rich, well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.0–7.0).

  • Spacing: Thin seedlings to 6–8 inches apart for proper airflow.

  • Light Requirements: Full sun to partial shade (more shade in hot climates).

  • Deadheading: Removing faded flowers encourages continuous blooming.

  • Fertilization: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks for vigorous growth.

  • Bloom Time: Spring to early fall in cool climates; may fade in summer heat.
