Seed Treatment (Stratification)

  1. Cold Stratification:

    • Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours.

    • Place seeds in a moist paper towel or sand inside a plastic bag.

    • Store in the refrigerator (35–40°F / 2–4°C) for 60 days.

Sowing Instructions

  1. Best Time to Sow:

    • Outdoors: In fall (seeds will naturally stratify over winter).

    • Indoors:Late winter to early spring after cold stratification.

  2. Soil Preparation:

    • Use well-draining soil (a mix of garden soil, sand, and compost).

    • pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (5.5–7.5).

  3. Planting Depth:

    • Sow seeds 1/4 inch (6 mm) deep.

    • Lightly cover with soil.

  4. Germination Conditions:

    • Temperature: 65–75°F (18–24°C).

    • Light: Partial shade to full sun.

    • Moisture: Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.

  5. Germination Time:

    • Seeds take up to 60 days to germinate.

  6. Transplanting:

    • Once seedlings have 2–3 sets of true leaves, transplant them to their permanent location.

    • Space plants 5–10 feet (1.5–3 m) apart to allow for vine growth.

Tip: Virginia Creeper grows vigorously, so plant it where it has room to spread!
