Parthenocissus quinquefolia | Virginia Creeper

Seed Treatment

  1. Cold Stratify: Mix seeds with a small amount of moist sand or a damp paper towel.
  2. Seal them inside a plastic bag and refrigerate for 60–90 days at 35–40°F (2–4°C).
  3. Check regularly: If seedlings begin to sprout during stratification, gently remove them from the bag and plant them immediately.

Sowing Instructions

  • After stratification, sow seeds indoors or in a greenhouse.
  • Use a seed-starting mix and press seeds lightly into the surface—do not cover deeply.
  • Keep the soil moist but not soggy.

Germination Details

  • Germination Time: 30–60 days after stratification
  • Maximum Total Germination Time: Up to 150 days
  • Optimal Temperature: 68–77°F (20–25°C) during germination

Post-Germination Care

  • Place seedlings in bright, indirect light.
  • Once they develop several true leaves, transplant into larger pots or directly outdoors after the last frost.
  • Space plants about 3–5 feet apart near a wall, trellis, or fence—they climb vigorously.
  • Water regularly until established; drought-tolerant once mature.
  • Prune as needed to control spread.

Tips

  • Hardy in USDA Zones 3–9
  • Grows rapidly and provides lush green summer foliage with brilliant red fall color
  • Excellent for covering unsightly structures, walls, or fences
