Paulownia tomentosa (Empress Tree)
Seed Preparation:
- Cold stratify the seeds in a moist paper towel in the refrigerator for 4 weeks. Do not let the paper towel dry out.
- Check weekly: If seedlings sprout in the fridge, remove them gently and plant immediately.
Sowing Instructions:
- Timing: Start seeds indoors in late winter to early spring or sow directly outdoors after the last frost.
- Soil: Use light, well-draining soil such as a mix of sand, perlite, and peat. Avoid heavy, compacted soil.
- Planting Depth: Do not bury the seeds. Simply press them lightly onto the surface of the soil, as they require light to germinate.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Mist the surface lightly to avoid displacing the seeds.
- Temperature: Maintain a warm environment (70-85°F / 21-29°C) for optimal germination.
- Light Requirements: Place in a bright, well-lit location or under grow lights for at least 12-16 hours per day.
- Germination Time: Seeds typically germinate in 30-60 days under ideal conditions.
Seedling Care:
- Once seedlings appear, keep them in bright, indirect sunlight and gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions before transplanting.
- Transplant when seedlings are 4-6 inches tall, spacing them 10-15 feet apart in a sunny location with well-draining soil.
- Paulownia trees grow extremely fast and require frequent watering in the first year, but they become drought-tolerant once established.
Happy planting! ?
