Seed Treatment
Cold Stratification: Place seeds in a sealed plastic bag with slightly damp peat moss or paper towel. Refrigerate at 4–5 °C (39–41 °F) for 4–6 weeks. Do not allow seeds to freeze. If seedlings emerge in the bag, remove them and plant immediately.
Sowing Instructions
When to Sow:
Indoors — after stratification, sow in late winter to early spring
Outdoors — sow in late fall for natural stratification
Soil Requirements:
Use a light, well-draining, acidic mix — peat moss + perlite or peat + fine sand.
Ideal pH: 4.5–6.0.
Light Requirements:
Seeds need light to germinate. Surface sow and provide bright indirect light or use grow lights. Avoid direct sun.
Sowing Depth:
Surface sow — gently press seeds into soil surface. Do not cover with soil.
Watering:
Mist gently; keep soil consistently moist, never soggy.
Maintain high humidity with a plastic dome or clear bag with ventilation holes.
Germination Time: 30 to 120 days
Optimum temperature: 18–22 °C (65–72 °F)
Post-Germination Care:
Once seedlings develop 2–3 sets of true leaves, carefully transplant to individual pots with acidic, well-drained soil.
Handle gently to avoid damaging delicate roots.
Growing Tips:
Patience — Rhododendrons are slow growers but very rewarding.
Grow in partial shade; protect from harsh sun & frost.
Maintain acidic soil, consistent moisture, and avoid disturbing roots.
Ideal for woodland gardens, acidic borders, and shaded areas.
