SAGINA SUBULATA (Irish Moss)
Seed Treatment (Pre-Sowing Preparation)
✅ Cold Stratification
-
To improve germination, cold stratify seeds for 2-4 weeks before planting.
-
Mix seeds with a small amount of damp sand or peat moss, place them in a sealed plastic bag, and store them in the refrigerator at 35-40°F (2-4°C).
Sowing Instructions
1️⃣ Timing: Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost or sow directly outdoors in early spring or fall.
2️⃣ Soil: Use well-draining, sandy or loamy soil, rich in organic matter. pH should be slightly acidic to neutral (5.5-7.0).
3️⃣ Light Requirement: Do NOT cover the seeds; they need light to germinate.
4️⃣ Planting Depth: Sprinkle the seeds on the surface of moist soil and press them in lightly.
5️⃣ Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy using a fine mist spray.
6️⃣ Temperature: Ideal germination temperature is 65-70°F (18-21°C).
7️⃣ Germination Time: Seeds typically germinate in 7-21 days.
Post-Germination Care
? Thin seedlings when they develop 2-3 leaves, spacing them 6-12 inches apart.
☀️ Provide partial to full sun for best growth.
? Keep the soil evenly moist but avoid overwatering.
? Once established, Irish Moss spreads quickly and forms a dense, low-growing carpet.
Enjoy your lush green carpet of Sagina subulata! ?✨
