Sagina subulata - Irish Moss

Lush, low-growing ground cover with mossy texture and tiny white blooms.

Seed Prep

Cold Stratification: Recommended. Place seeds on a damp paper towel inside a zip-lock bag. Refrigerate at 4°C (40°F) for 2–3 weeks.
Check Weekly: If any seeds sprout during stratification, remove and plant immediately.

When to Sow
Indoors: Start 6–8 weeks before last frost.
Outdoors: Sow in early spring or fall in mild climates for natural stratification.

Germination Conditions
Optimal Temp: 15–20°C (59–68°F)
Light Requirement: 12–16 hours/day – use grow lights if needed
Germination Time: Up to 35 days after stratification

Sowing Instructions
Depth: Gently press seeds onto moist soil — do not cover, light is required to germinate.
Soil: Use fine, well-draining seed-starting mix or sandy loam.
Watering: Mist gently to keep soil evenly moist without disturbing seeds.
Humidity: Use a humidity dome or plastic wrap to retain moisture during germination.

Post-Germination Care
Transplant: Once seedlings are sturdy and frost risk has passed.
Spacing: 10–15 cm (4–6 in) apart for solid coverage.
Light: Full sun to part shade.
Water: Keep moist while establishing; tolerates brief drought later.

Growing Tips
Avoid soggy conditions — Irish Moss prefers well-draining soil.
Great for borders, stepping stones, rock gardens, or containers.
Occasionally mow or trim for compact growth.

  • Water regularly during dry spells, especially until well-established.
  • Avoid overwatering; allow the top layer of soil to dry between waterings.
  • Tolerates light foot traffic once established.
