Sedum spurium (Two-Row Stonecrop, Caucasian Stonecrop)

For optimal germination rates, initiate seed propagation indoors under controlled conditions—unless the species exhibits a high sensitivity to root disturbance. This approach allows precise regulation of temperature, humidity, and light, improving germination consistency and seedling viability. Do not skip any recommended seed treatments, as they are essential for uniform and successful germination.

⚠️ Keep soil evenly moist during germination. DO NOT LET IT DRY OUT—once seeds begin absorbing water (imbibition), drying can kill the seed embryo, and even brief dryness after sprouting can kill seedlings.

Seed Treatment

Cold stratify seeds for 2–4 weeks (14–28 days) in the refrigerator at 1–5°C (34–41°F). Sow seeds on moist seed-starting mix inside a sealed bag or container and refrigerate.

Check regularly: If seedlings sprout in the fridge, remove them gently and plant immediately.

When to Sow

Indoors: Start 8–10 weeks before your last frost date.
Outdoors (natural stratification): Sow in late fall or early winter. Scatter seeds on prepared soil and lightly press in. Natural winter cold will break dormancy. Keep soil lightly moist.

How to Sow Indoors

  1. Fill trays or pots with fine, well-draining seed-starting mix.

  2. Surface sow seeds—do not bury. Gently press into soil. Light needed for germination – do not cover seeds.

  3. Use grow lights to maintain 12–16 hours of light per day.

  4. Mist carefully to avoid displacing seeds.

  5. Optimum temperature: Use a heat mat to maintain steady temperatures of 18–22°C (65–72°F) after stratification

  6. ? Humidity: Use a humidity dome or clear cover to maintain consistent moisture during germination. Open the dome BRIEFLY once per day to allow fresh air in and reduce mold risk. Remove the dome entirely once seedlings emerge.

  7. Keep soil consistently moist but never soggy.

Germination time: Up to 28 days after stratification

Post-Germination Care

  • Once seedlings develop 2–3 true leaves, transplant into individual pots.
    • Gradually acclimate (harden off) before outdoor planting.
    • Plant in full sun for best color and compact growth.
    • Use very well-draining soil—rocky or sandy soils are ideal.

Type: Hardy perennial succulent ground cover
Mature height: 10–15 cm (4–6 inches)
Spacing: 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) apart
Spread: Forms dense mats up to 45 cm (18 inches) wide

Growing Tips

  • Extremely drought tolerant once established.
    • Avoid overwatering—sedums prefer slightly dry conditions.
    • Excellent for rock gardens, borders, green roofs, and erosion control.
    • Deadheading is not necessary but can improve appearance.
    • Divides easily after a few seasons for quick expansion.
